Record WA cycling investment continues with latest grants round
- 74 cycling projects across WA to share $7.6 million in WA Bicycle Network grants
- State Government partnering with 51 local governments to deliver more than 100km of new paths
- Part of WA Government's record $220 million investment in cycling infrastructure over four years
- Construction also begins to fix the final gap in the Kwinana Freeway Principal Shared Path
A $7.6 million McGowan Government cycling investment, matched by local governments, will help to build and plan for more than 100 kilometres of new paths across Western Australia.
The latest cycling investment will be delivered over the next two years through the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program and provides 74 grants to 51 local governments who have applied for funding.
The grants program assists local governments with the planning, design and construction of cycling infrastructure, and is part of the McGowan Government's record $220 million cycling infrastructure roll out.
The $7.6 million in WA Bicycle Network grants is split between metropolitan and regional WA, supporting connections to schools, tourism and community hubs.
In Perth, $3.77 million has been allocated to 23 projects including:
- Continuing the Railway Parade Shared Path from William Street to Ladywell Street in the City of Gosnells;
- Continuing the Canning Route 2 to connect Cannington to Willetton in the City of Canning;
- New protected bicycle lanes along Archer and Mint Streets in the Town of Victoria Park.
Regionally, $3.83 million will support 51 projects, stretching from Esperance in the south to Kununurra in the north. They include:
- The Bandy Creek Road shared path from Fisheries Road to Bandy Creek in the Shire of Esperance;
- The Northlink to Muchea shared path connection in the Shire of Chittering;
- The Wilson Street shared path project in the Town of Port Hedland.
Separately, the McGowan Government has also reached a new milestone on its PSP expansion program, with work now underway to complete the final gap in the Kwinana Freeway PSP between Perth and Mandurah.
Completion of the final section of the Kwinana Freeway PSP between Leach Highway and Cranford Avenue will create 74 kilometres of high quality, uninterrupted path between Perth and Mandurah.
The $16 million project is being undertaken by local company Georgiou and includes a new underpass beneath the Cranford Avenue on-ramp to the freeway northbound, allowing people walking and riding to travel safely under busy Cranford Avenue.
Perth-based Advanteering Civil Engineers has also started the latest extension of the Fremantle Line Principal Shared Path - a $5.1 million project from Victoria Street Station to North Fremantle Station.
The further 2.1 kilometres of path, due for completion in mid-2021, will improve safety and connectivity between Fremantle and the Perth CBD as well as destinations in between.
Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"In the past year we have seen cycling participation increase dramatically and the McGowan Government is building the infrastructure to match.
"The WA Bicycle Network grants allow us to partner with local governments to deliver grassroots connections - to local schools, tourism attractions, town centres and more.
"As we have seen with our record investment in cycling infrastructure - when we put the paths in place, habits change and people use them.
"This funding injection into WA's bike network will help ensure infrastructure is continuous across local government boundaries and provides enhanced recreational, commuter and tourism cycling experiences for residents and visitors to WA.
"The WA Government continues to invest in our bicycle network at record rates, with $7.6 million in WA Bicycle Network grant funding to be shared across 74 metropolitan and regional cycling projects around the State as part of our $220 million commitment to cycling and walking infrastructure over the next four years."
