Joint media statement - Opening date set for new METRONET Lakelands Station

The new METRONET Lakelands Station in Mandurah, south of Perth, will open on Sunday 11 June.

The new METRONET Lakelands Station in Mandurah, south of Perth, will open on Sunday 11 June.

The opening will be marked by a community celebration including children's entertainers, face painting, live music, giveaways, sausage sizzles and food trucks.

The opening of Lakelands Station will take pressure off nearby Mandurah and Warnbro stations and provide a journey time of 50 minutes to the CBD.

The new station includes an entry building complete with Aboriginal artwork, a pedestrian overpass, two platforms, park/kiss-and-ride facilities, a bus interchange, a 400-bay car park, and cycling facilities.

The station has also been future-proofed with provision for additional facilities such as more escalators, more lifts and fare gates as needed.

Passengers using the new Lakelands Station will benefit from the State Government's two zone fare cap, which will reduce the cost of a one-way ticket to the CBD from $11.30 to $4.90, saving regular passengers potentially thousands of dollars every year.

Since the introduction of the two-zone fare cap, passenger numbers from Mandurah have shown strong growth, with regular customers saving thousands of dollars in the first year of the scheme's operation.

The $72 million project has supported around 200 jobs since construction began in November 2021. The project was originally budgeted at $80 million and was jointly funded by the Commonwealth ($64 million) and the Western Australian Government ($16 million).

Comments attributed to Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King:

"11 June marks another significant milestone in METRONET's expansion of Perth's public transport network.

"The METRONET Lakelands Station will be a game-changer for people in Mandurah's northern suburbs, contributing to the vision of better connecting major nearby population centres to Perth.

"METRONET is providing the infrastructure Perth and the surrounding areas need, reducing congestion and delivering thousands of jobs."

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"It's fantastic to be able to announce that in just over two months' time, the METRONET Lakelands Station will begin operations, providing this local community with their own train station for the first time.

"The station is located between Warnbro and Mandurah stations and will provide Mandurah Line commuters with another option to make the trip to and from the city for work and leisure.

"Importantly - people using the Lakelands Station to travel to the city or the airport will benefit from our two-zone cap, which has already saved regular commuters thousands of dollars in its first year of operation."

Quotes attributable to Senator for Western Australia Louise Pratt:

"The opening of the new Lakelands station will add both an essential travel option and convenience for many commuters who live in Mandurah yet need to work in Perth.

"This is another example of the Australian Government working with the Western Australian Government to deliver this important piece of job creating infrastructure, further linking the people of Mandurah to the centre of Perth.

"This is an exciting next step in the growth of METRONET, as we once again join the WA Government in continuing to build the infrastructure that commuters in this fast-growing area need and deserve."

Comments attributed to Mandurah MLA David Templeman:

"We have thousands of residents living in the north Mandurah suburbs of Lakelands and Madora Bay who currently have to travel to either Mandurah or Warnbro to get on a train - but not anymore.

"In just two months' time - Lakelands residents will have their very own station, providing them with unprecedented access to the train network.

"With the establishment of the new station, there will be some slight changes to the bus networks, which were publicised during recent consultation. I encourage the community to jump on the Transperth website ahead of the opening in June to see what the changes mean for them."
