Joint media statement - Opening date set for new METRONET Lakelands Station

The new METRONET Lakelands Station in Mandurah, south of Perth, will open on Sunday 11 June.

The opening will be marked by a community celebration including children's entertainers, face painting, live music, giveaways, sausage sizzles and food trucks.

The opening of Lakelands Station will take pressure off nearby Mandurah and Warnbro stations and provide a journey time of 50 minutes to the CBD.

The new station includes an entry building complete with Aboriginal artwork, a pedestrian overpass, two platforms, park/kiss-and-ride facilities, a bus interchange, a 400-bay car park, and cycling facilities. 

The station has also been future-proofed with provision for additional facilities such as more escalators, more lifts and fare gates as needed.

Passengers using the new Lakelands Station will benefit from the State Government's two zone fare cap, which will reduce the cost of a one-way ticket to the CBD from $11.30 to $4.90, saving regular passengers potentially thousands of dollars every year.

Since the introduction of the two-zone fare cap, passenger numbers from Mandurah have shown strong growth, with regular customers saving thousands of dollars in the first year of the scheme's operation.

The $72 million project has supported around 200 jobs since construction began in November 2021. The project was originally budgeted at $80 million and was jointly funded by the Commonwealth ($64 million) and the Western Australian Government ($16 million).
