Joint media statement - Congestion relief for Perth's east as Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road Interchange completed

More than 74,000 commuters in Perth's eastern suburbs will save up to seven minutes when travelling during peak times with the opening of the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road Interchange in High Wycombe.

More than 74,000 commuters in Perth's eastern suburbs will save up to seven minutes when travelling during peak times with the opening of the Roe Highway and Kalamunda Road Interchange in High Wycombe.

The $86 million project lowered the Roe Highway nine metres beneath Kalamunda Road, with connectivity between the two roads retained by two new roundabouts and new on and off ramps to the highway.

The result has been immediate congestion relief, improved journey times and better safety outcomes at what had previously been one of Perth's busiest intersections, used by 74,000 vehicles daily.

More than three kilometres of new Principal Shared Path (PSP) for cyclists and pedestrians was also constructed as part of the project.

Extending along the eastern side of Roe Highway between Berkshire Road and Kalamunda Road, the new PSP offers better connectivity between Forrestfield, Maida Vale and High Wycombe.

The project was jointly funded by the Australian Government ($68.8 million) and WA Government ($17.2 million) and supported 600 jobs.

Comments attributable to Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP:

"This project is one of many critical infrastructure projects to receive funding from the Morrison Government as part of our record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia's economic recovery.

"By alleviating congestion along critical sections of roads like this one, we're helping people to get home to their families sooner and safer, we're helping freight move more quickly between our cities, and we're generating jobs across the country."

Comments attributable to WA Transport Minister, the Hon Rita Saffioti MLA:

"This project will be a game changer for our eastern suburbs and is expected to slash up to seven minutes off a commuter's daily peak travel times.

"This work has been delivered by a successful WA contractor and has supported hundreds of direct and indirect local jobs, as well as opportunities for local suppliers.

"We are continuing to transform the transport infrastructure in our eastern suburbs, with work to commence on the Great Eastern Highway Bypass Interchanges project later this year and the METRONET Forrestfield-Airport Link to open in the first half of 2022."

Comments attributable to Federal Member for Swan, the Hon Steve Irons MP:

"The removal of one of the last remaining signalised intersections on Roe Highway will help ensure safer and more efficient journeys for local commuters.

"The Morrison Government is committed to busting congestion across Perth by investing in this type of project, and eastern suburbs commuters are the big winners from opening this upgrade."

Comments attributable to Forrestfield MLA, Stephen Price:

"This project was one of my key election commitments and I am so pleased to see it completed.

"This important upgrade decreases congestion in this area, making the commute quicker and safer for my local community."
