$7 million upgrades planned for busy southern intersection

• $7 million to upgrade intersection of Stock Road and Beeliar Drive in City of Cockburn
• Upgrades will significantly improve safety for riders, walkers and road users
• Funding provided by Metropolitan Intersection Crashes Program and expected to be completed by April

The McGowan Government has allocated $7 million to upgrade the busy southern suburbs intersection of Stock Road and Beeliar Drive in the City of Cockburn.

Works will commence later this year and will improve safety at the intersection for cyclists and pedestrians by enabling them to cross under signal control with all traffic stopped.

Traffic flow will be improved with new lanes on all approaches, new and extended turning pockets and upgraded traffic signals.

Safety barriers will be installed on the western corners of the intersection together with upgraded street lighting.

More than 24,000 vehicles pass through the busy intersection each day, with 53 reported crashes in the past five years.

The $7 million project is funded by the State Government's Metropolitan Intersection Crashes Program and is expected to be completed by April 2021.

"This $7 million upgrade will improve safety at this key intersection for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

"Works will begin later this year and are anticipated to be finished in April 2021, supporting local jobs.

"These upgrades will complement the range of other major transport upgrades underway in our southern suburbs including the Kwinana Freeway widening, North Lake Road bridge, and of course the Thornlie-Cockburn Link."

"These works include a range of changes to the layout of the intersection and other treatments which will improve the safety and experience of all road users, with a focus on people walking and cycling.

"The improvements are being funded through the Road Trauma Trust Account, which collects 100 per cent of its funds from speed and red light camera infringements.

"These are exactly the sorts of projects this fund was set up for - initiatives which improve road safety outcomes and help prevent the types of crashes which cause serious injury or death."

"I am so happy that at long last this terrible intersection will be fixed.

"I made an election commitment to push and lobby for this to be done during this term of the McGowan Government and it's great that Minister Saffioti has secured the funding for it.

"The intersection causes massive traffic build ups and delays.

"Locals will now be able to get to work and schools around Cockburn without sitting in this traffic snarl."
