Asian Engagement Minister Bill Johnston is pleased to welcome East Java's Persebaya football team that will arrive in Perth tomorrow (June 28).

The Persebaya Under-19 team will undertake an eight-day tour of Perth and Rottnest Island, with the Football West Gold Fields State Team, as part of a two-way exchange program.

During their visit, Persebaya are scheduled to play three matches against local teams and visit the Western Australian Institute of Sport.

Football West will host the visit, which is a result of months of co-operation with the WA Government.

The tour is expected to be one of the first of many taken by teams from Asia, where football is the most popular sport.

Comments attributed to Asian Engagement Minister Bill Johnston:

"I'm very pleased the Persebaya football team are coming to Perth to play against our local teams and build our sporting connections with our Asian neighbours.

"East Java has been a Sister State to WA for almost 30 years, so it's important we continue to strengthen our ties with the Indonesian province.

"The McGowan Government is committed to supporting our State's tourism sector and enhancing our relationships with other cultures."
