History-making flight returns from London to Perth
- Qantas' first nonstop London to Perth flight departs Heathrow Airport today
- New nonstop Dreamliner service is the fastest way to get to Australia from Europe
- All passengers receive a free trip to Rottnest Island to mark the milestone
- Tourism is a key element of the McGowan Government's plan to diversify the economy and create more WA jobs
After its history-making direct maiden voyage from Perth to London, the Qantas Dreamliner is heading back to Perth, from London, bringing a planeload of visitors to Western Australia.
Premier Mark McGowan and Tourism Minister Paul Papalia were at Heathrow to farewell passengers and hand out complementary trips to Rottnest Island to mark the occasion.
Visitors on the inaugural return flight will arrive tomorrow morning to a traditional Aboriginal welcome to country, and a 'Welcome to WA' pack including a stuffed toy quokka, sunscreen, and a book of discount vouchers to use in Perth.
Some of the United Kingdom's top travel and lifestyle editors, and freelance writers, who are on board the flight will spend several days experiencing some of the highlights of Perth and the Margaret River region.
There will also be a film crew from ITV on board who will broadcast live from Perth as part of a competition for viewers of UK TV programs This Morning and Lorraine, to win flights to Perth.
The direct flights will change the way people travel between Europe and Australia, and provide the opportunity to sell Perth, and WA, as the place to start an Australian holiday.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"We're at Heathrow Airport to bid bon voyage to the first planeload of lucky passengers heading direct from London to Perth today on the inaugural QF10 flight.
"Perth, Australia's sunniest capital city, has become one of the country's most interesting destinations with a vibrant city life that is surrounded by an incredible natural environment.
"Visitors can enjoy an award-winning wine region, pristine bushland or an ocean sunset within just 30 minutes of the city, while relaxed day-trip options include swimming with dolphins, meeting Rottnest Island's quokkas or exploring the Pinnacles."
Comments attributed to Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:
"This historic flight opens up a new era of travel, meaning that for the first time, Europe and Australia have a direct air link, so instead of travelling through Asia or the Middle East, visitors can start their holiday in WA.
"Perth is now officially the western gateway to Europe and we are looking forward to increased numbers of visitors from Europe to experience Perth and our extraordinary State.
"I'm thrilled the first load of passengers to Perth will receive the warmest of welcomes from our furry quokka friends on Rottnest Island."
