Funding to put Collie Motorplex on road to national accreditation
- Additional $314,000 funding to complete redevelopment of the Collie Motorplex
- Funding will enable track to achieve accreditation, creating opportunities to host national motorsport events and boosting the local economy
The McGowan Government will provide an additional $314,000 for the Collie Motorplex redevelopment, to bring the facility to national standards and create opportunities for major sporting events in the South-West.
Civil works are now almost complete on the $2.97 million redevelopment project, which has included extending the existing 1.6 kilometre track to 2.3 kilometres, and upgrading competitor and spectator facilities.
The further $314,000 is required to complete site works that would enable the track to be sanctioned by national bodies.
This funding will be used to construct arrester beds, expand run-off areas, replace kerbing and repair existing pavement to achieve accreditation. The upgrades will bring the facility up to the highest national safety standards.
Once accredited, the Collie Motorplex will become a major sports tourism drawcard for Collie and the South-West, attracting national-level events and providing a boost to the local economy.
Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
"Collie Motorplex will play a key role in diversifying the Collie economy, with these upgrades set to put the town in the mix for nationally significant events.
"National accreditation is the next step for the motorplex and will create new opportunities to attract tourists and create local jobs in town.
"Collie Motorplex is already a great South-West asset, but with these upgrades it will be able to set its sights on attracting national-level competitions."
Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"We want to see Collie become a centre for motorsports in regional WA, providing a boost to the local economy and driving job opportunities in the South-West.
"Securing this funding means the Collie community will enjoy all the benefits of a state-of-the-art motorplex that has real national pulling power."
