Work underway on masts for northern suburban transit system

Work has begun on the installation of 800 concrete masts for the $275 million northern suburbs transit system.

Work has begun on the installation of 800 concrete masts for the $275 million northern suburbs transit system.

Transport Minister Pam Beggs said the first masts would be installed between the city and Loftus Street, with installations to follow from Scarborough Beach Road northwards.

Mrs Beggs said the seven-metre tall precast and prestressed concrete masts would support a traction overhead wiring system for the 29 kilometre-long electric railway.

The masts would be between 50 and 65 metres apart, planted in concrete foundations with hinged cantilevers holding porcelain insulators.

Power for the 22 two-car electric trains to be used on the system would be supplied by a 25-kilovolt overhead wire supported by the masts.

The masts were being manufactured by the Western Australian company Delta Corporation at Herne Hill and installed by Barclay Mowlem (WA) Construction Limited.

Up to 15 masts would be erected daily, with the work due to be finished by November.
