Guard rail barrier between freeway and northern subs railway line

A steel guard rail barrier will be erected between the Mitchell Freeway and the Perth-Joondalup railway line as an added safety measure.

And work will begin soon on building the final link in the northern suburbs rail system - the station at Currambine.

Transport Minister and Whitford MLA Pam Beggs today said the barrier would prevent vehicles entering the rail reserve.

"Safety, both on and off trains, will be paramount when regular passenger services begin on the new line," she said.

The $1.2 million contract to supply the 56 km of galvanised steel rail barrier had been let to TG Industries of Osborne Park.

Mrs Beggs said the barrier would be installed under a separate contract after the main construction works were finished.

Work on the Currambine station would begin soon.  The $2.8 million contract had been let to Doubikin Constructions Pty Ltd of Cannington.

"Currambine will be the terminus for the line marking the end of the 29.2 km track," Mrs Beggs said.

"The station will be sited on the west side of the freeway reserve and as it is the only station in the system that is alongside a greenfields site, it presents a good opportunity to plan an attractive suburb with an emphasis on easy access to the terminal."

Mrs Beggs said Currambine would have a pedestrian underpass through to a central platform, provision for train storage and internal railcar cleaning facilities.

There would be commuter car parking for 400 cars initially with set-down and pick-up bays on the western side.  A bus stop would be installed on Burns Beach Road.

The station was due to be commissioned by the middle of next year.
