Contract awarded for work on Edgewater station

Work on the Northern Suburbs Rapid Transit System station at Edgewater has stepped up with the awarding of a $1.5 million contract.

Work on the Northern Suburbs Rapid Transit System station at Edgewater has stepped up with the awarding of a $1.5 million contract.

Transport Minister and Whitford MLA Pam Beggs today said the contract to complete the station had been let to Sabemo Australia Pty Ltd.

Work is scheduled to be completed by early October.

Mrs Beggs said concrete works for the Edgewater Station platform walls and pedestrian footbridge being built by McMahon Kanny were almost complete.

The main access road, roundabout and junction with Joondalup Drive had been built under another forward works contract.

The new contract with Sabemo covers the remaining station works and includes shelters, fittings, paving and services for the island platform.

Associated works involve a paved parking area for 700 cars, kiss-n-ride drop off area, access and distribution roads, communications buildings, shelters, landscaping and drainage.

Mrs Beggs said the contract was one of two tenders awarded in the latest round. The other was a $1 million contract for Leederville station that had been let to John Holland Constructions.

"The work on the stations will provide employment for about 100 people in the peak construction phase," Mrs Beggs said.

"In fact, the whole Northern Suburbs Rapid Transit System is a major employer with around 600 direct jobs being created.

"And the project also is having spin offs for local companies.

"For example, ABB Transformers of Osborne Park has a $1.1 million contract to build the transformers for the system, whereas similar equipment for the electrification of the existing lines was built in the Eastern States.

"Two big 12.5MVA capacity power transformers will be connected to SECWA's 132,000 volts system. A further 22 booster transformers will be installed along the line to minimise electrical interference in railway communication and signals equipment."
