Approval given to developers of old Swan Brewery site

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Judyth Watson has given approval to developers of the old Swan Brewery site.

In doing so, she has not accepted a recommendation from the Aboriginal Cultural Material committee that consent should not be given to Bluegate Nominees Proprietary Limited to use the site as a commercial and retail complex.

Bluegate made application under Section 18 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act to carry out restoration and new work on the site of the old Swan Brewery.

"Whilst I understand my decision will cause concern amongst some Aboriginal people, I believe it is in the general interest of the broader community," Dr Watson said.

"While I respect the Aboriginal significance of the area, it is equally important to recognise the heritage value of the existing buildings and the need for their preservation."
