In-term swimming advanced levels to be re-introduced

In-term swimming to the highest levels will be reintroduced in Western Australian schools at the start of 1993.

Education Minister Kay Hallahan today announced she had reversed a decision to phase out the most advanced levels of swimming training during school time.

Mrs Hallahan said she made the decision following representations from parents concerned about the changes.

"In October, the Ministry of Education decided to reduce the levels of in-term swimming from Stages 1 to 12 to Stages 1 to 9," she said.

"The reduction meant students could achieve the senior swimming certificate - including basic lifesaving techniques - but could progress no further in school time.

"While Stage 9 is the level of proficiency in swimming and personal survival skills which the majority of students should attain before leaving primary school, it is recognised that students should be given the chance to develop skills beyond this level."

The Minister's latest decision means the final three stages of swimming training will be reinstated next year.

Mrs Hallahan said the WA Ministry of Education's swimming program was the most comprehensive, high-quality program available through schools in Australia.
