Construction of the dual rail bridges spanning Burns Beach Road at Currambine has commenced, following the awarding of the contract to Transfield Pty Ltd.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the $1.7 million contract represented another milestone in the extension of rail services to the growing northern suburbs.
"We are right on schedule to commence the services to Clarkson by September 2003," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Site earthworks between Currambine and Clarkson commenced in early May and the clearing work has already been completed."
The Minister said tenders for the stations at Clarkson, Currambine and Greenwood would be called towards the end of this year.
Ove Arup and Partners has won the contract to superintend the bridge works.
The bridges will be located immediately north of the new Currambine Station platform. Construction of the bridges should be completed by April 2002 with minimal disruption to traffic on Burns Beach Road.

"There will be a one day deviation around the site on two different weekends when the pre-fabricated spans are lifted into place and speed limits will be reduced during the construction period," Ms MacTiernan said.
Pedestrian access through the site will be on the south side of Burns Beach Road.
The Northern Suburbs Transit System extensions consist of approximately four kilometres of double-track railway to Clarkson and two kilometres of single-track railway to a proposed rail car depot at Nowergup.
Clarkson station will be a major feature in the Main Street hub of the new 'smart town' development of Clarkson Township. The station will have Park 'n' Ride and bus interchange facilities, pedestrian and cycle access, escalators and lifts. The integration of public transport facilities with retail, commercial and community space will offer a model for transit-oriented residential developments of the future.
