Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today the awarding of the $8.7million contract for the construction of Clarkson Station to Transfield Construction - WA.
The contract ensures that the station will be finished in time for the start of services in September 2004.
"Clarkson Station will be a major transit interchange with bus transfer, car drop off/pick up facilities and Park 'n' Ride for approximately 800 cars," Ms MacTiernan said.
"It's expected there will be up to 3,000 additional passengers on the Joondalup line, taking the 30-minute journey from Clarkson to Perth each weekday."
The contract is the next step in the Government's $81million extension of the line and purchase of 12 new railcars.
Clarkson Station will be designed for convenient pedestrian and cycle access and with facilities including a kiosk, escalators and a lift.
"A full-time station attendant and closed circuit television coverage will ensure passenger security," the Minister said.
"The station will be the public transport focus for 'Somerly', a joint venture residential development between Landstart - the land development arm of the State Government's Department of Housing and Works - and private company Urban Pacific.
"Bus services that currently run to Joondalup Station from Mindarie, Quinns, Merriwa, Butler and Clarkson will be re-directed to the new station.
"When services start from Mandurah, Clarkson will become the northern terminus of a 105km, 78-minute rapid transit spine for the metropolitan area."
The Joondalup line extensions consist of approximately four kilometres of double-track railway to Clarkson and two kilometres of single-track railway to a railcar maintenance and stowage depot at Nowergup. The extensions will be located in the proposed future Mitchell Freeway median.
Other construction works finished or almost completed on the extension include: the $1.7million Burns Beach Road bridges, the almost complete $15million earthworks contract for the rail extension and the Nowergup Depot, and construction of the new Currambine Station platform.
