Capital works funding in the 2003-04 State Budget will see one of the biggest primary schools in the Kalgoorlie area receive a $2million upgrade.
Education and Training Minister Alan Carpenter said the allocation for South Kalgoorlie Primary School was announced by Treasurer Eric Ripper in last week's State Budget, which focussed on building for the future.
Mr Carpenter said the State Government would spend a record $3.5billion on capital works projects over the 2003-04 financial year, including $133million on capital works and refurbishment in WA State schools.
The Minister said the Department of Education and Training had completed a consultation process at South Kalgoorlie Primary School on the most effective options for the upgrade.
"The school will have a new covered assembly area incorporating a canteen, sports store, music room and dental therapy centre," he said.
"The old library will be demolished and a new library resource centre constructed.
"There will be alterations to the existing carpark and new staff and visitor parking facilities will also be provided.
"The work will also include enhancing the entry to the school and the provision of new transportable classrooms as required.
"The upgrade work, which is expected to be completed by late 2004, will also include the refurbishment of the existing outdoor courts.
"Our schools should be showcases of community infrastructure, the sort of places which make local kids want to attend school, and to stay there as long as possible."
Eyre MLA John Bowler, a former student of South Kalgoorlie Primary School, said he was delighted to learn of the Treasurer's announcement.
"South Kalgoorlie has a proud tradition of providing a fine education to generations of Goldfields students," Mr Bowler said.
"I know students, parents and teachers alike will welcome this major upgrade and the improved educational outcomes that will follow."
