Tom Price and Paraburdoo to benefit from flight agreement for health workers
2/9/02
Health Minister Bob Kucera announced today that agreement had been reached with Karratha Flying Services, guaranteeing monthly flight services for allied health professionals to the communities of Tom Price and Paraburdoo.
Mr Kucera said occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech pathologists would be able to offer a more reliable service under the agreement.
"The Government has made this agreement to remove interruptions to service delivery because flights between West Pilbara towns can be unreliable," he said.
"It is unreasonable to expect staff to drive for six or seven hours between Karratha and the communities of Tom Price and Paraburdoo so a flight is the quickest, safest and best option.
"The agreement will also allow movement of staff between Karratha and outlying areas and will provide transport of regular pharmacy supplies and medical equipment."
Mr Kucera said the State Government was currently applying for funds through the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing's Regional Health Services program to enable the charter service to occur more frequently.
He said a decision from the Commonwealth should be known later this month.
"This agreement is another example of the State Government's commitment to provide quality health services for all West Australian's - no matter where they live," the Minister said.
