Strong demand for blocks along new Southern Suburbs Railway route
29/5/04
Today's first release of blocks near the future Wellard Train Station, along the new Southern Suburbs Railway route, is set to be a sell-out.
First homebuyers and investors alike camped out last night to ensure they secured one of 47 lots at The Village at Wellard - a 2,700-lot Transit Oriented Development.
By lunchtime today, 26 of the lots had been sold and there was a steady line of people still waiting to enter Peet and Co's sales office to snap up a block.
Wellard Station is one of nine stations to be constructed south of the Narrows Bridge as part of the State Government's Southern Suburbs Railway to Mandurah, set to be completed by December 2006.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said today's strong buyer demand was a vote of confidence in the massive passenger rail project.
"The State Government has formed a joint venture with Peet & Co to develop the first truly Transit Oriented Development in the southern suburbs," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The Village at Wellard - will ultimately accommodate a population of about 8,500, who will be less than 30 minutes train travelling time to Perth, 10 minutes to Rockingham and 20 minutes from Mandurah."
The residential mix included cottages, town houses and apartments blended with community facilities, future schools, small retail outlets and parklands.
"The pedestrian focus is reflected in the station design which is being built to cater mainly for walk-on passengers, rather than park 'n ride customers."
The station will open in 2006.
The first release comprises homesites ranging from 370sqm cottage sites to more traditional home lots up to 730sqm, all within walking distance of the station.
Peet & Co received registrations of interest from more than 350 potential buyers.
The development meets contemporary environmental expectations with the retention of 10 hectares of wetlands, 17ha of natural bushland, nearly 40ha of regrowth timber and the incorporation of 10ha of parkland.
Contracts to build all nine railway stations south of the Swan River are expected to be awarded by the end of this year.
