19/3/03
The State Government has provided a $50,000 grant to the Shire of Mount Magnet to help with the building of a new residence for the Mount Magnet/Cue doctor.
Housing Minister Tom Stephens announced the assistance today at Mt Magnet, where he inspected the house and met the doctor, who had come to the area from South Africa.
"The doctor is essential to this area, which has many children under the age of five," Mr Stephens said.
"If medical services were not available, these families may possibly relocate to Perth.
"This would likely mean insufficient work for the nursing post with its three nurses, resulting in further unemployment and greater use of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
"We are pleased to assist the shire provide better accommodation than the current house, which is 25 years old."
The grant is part of a $1.25million boost to rural and remote regions of Western Australia to improve housing availability.
The grants were provided under the Housing Development Incentive Scheme and delivered by the Country Housing Authority with funds from the Regional Infrastructure Funding Program and the Department of Housing and Works.
