Spectacular walkway adds to unique experience at Kings Park

Western Australians will be able to enjoy sweeping views of the Swan River from a new vantage point today, with the official opening of the $3.6million Lotterywest Federation Walkway.
The new walkway features a spectacular 52m, arched steel and glass bridge, which at its highest point is 16m above the ground. The full walkway is 620m in length.
Premier Geoff Gallop said the walkway would significantly enhance Kings Park's status as a tourist attraction, while also ensuring access to the park continued in an environmentally sensitive manner.
"Just over five million visitors in the past year have explored and enjoyed one of Perth's icon attractions," Dr Gallop said.
"The new walkway will build on this strong community interest - and add to the unique visitor experience.
"The best view in Perth has just got better.
"Reflecting the special place the park holds in Western Australians' hearts, entry to the walkway will be free - open from 9am to 5pm every day of the year."
Dr Gallop said the walkway was part of a significant State Government investment program in Kings Park's tourism, visitor and scientific research facilities.
"The walkway builds on the completion last year of the $2.4million Western Power Parkland, as well as commencement of a new $1.1million Plant Conservation Centre, to bolster the park's world-class research capabilities in conservation and seed genetics," he said.
"These commitments reflect the Government's genuine commitment to protect this unique city environment for future generations - and to making Perth a better place to live in."
Environment Minister Judy Edwards said the walkway incorporated a number of environmental and heritage themes, including interpretative features on Aboriginal culture and tree conservation.
"The elevated walkway and arched bridge are together a fusion of sculpture, architecture and engineering," Dr Edwards said.
"Forged from richly rusted steel, the walkway is designed to blend into the landscape so the focus is on the surrounding natural and inspiring views.
"Several art forms have also been incorporated into its structure, including the etching of Aboriginal artwork into the glass panels and cast iron floor of the bridge."
