Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan has welcomed the decision by the Town of Cambridge to redevelop the Perry Lakes Stadium site and to relocate athletics, rugby and basketball facilities to nearby AK Reserve and adjoining land.
"We were very clear that we needed to progress this matter without further delay," Ms MacTiernan said.
"I have worked closely with Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera, Cambridge Mayor Marlene Anderton and all the Cambridge Councilors and senior staff to achieve this result.
"Housing the three sporting codes together next to Challenger Stadium and McGillivray Oval is by far the best long-term plan.
"It will allow some very creative and cost effective planning and delivery for sports in Western Australia."
The Town of Cambridge voted last night to drop its alternative plan that involved refurbishing the Perry Lakes athletics stadium and will now consider a staged land release and redevelopment of the site.
Cambridge Mayor Marlene Anderton said she was pleased that the long-standing issue had been resolved.
"This decision shows the Town of Cambridge has been eager to find a solution that meets the needs of its ratepayers, while ensuring the viability of major sports in this State," Mayor Anderton said.
"We are confident of proceeding quickly as the State Government has offered to resolve a few outstanding issues regarding land swaps and zoning."
The State Government anticipates that design and construction plans will be finalised over the coming months and initial work on the sites could begin before the end of this year.
