Tourism Minister Clive Brown today welcomed a 200-strong contingent of international competitors, officials and media to Western Australia to compete in the Land Rover G4 Challenge.
Mr Brown said WA's Pilbara region would be home to the inaugural global event from April 13-18.
"The Land Rover G4 Challenge is an international multi-sport adventure challenge played out over four weeks across key locations in Australia, South Africa and America using Land Rover vehicles," Mr Brown said.
"The 16 competitors representing 16 countries will set off across the Pilbara to tackle a range of gruelling physical and endurance challenges that will put their orienteering, abseiling, kayaking and off-road skills to the test.
"Australia will be well-represented in the global challenge with former Ironman Guy Andrews competing in the event."
Mr Brown said the Land Rover G4 Challenge was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the region's spectacular scenery to an estimated global audience of 350 million.
"The Pilbara provides a stunning backdrop for the adventure challenge and will feature some of the North-West's most rugged and unique scenery," he said.
"Teams will head off from Karratha through Python Pool, Millstream National Park, Karijini National Park, Marble Bar before winding up in Port Hedland.
"Competitors will then head to Sydney for the urban challenge before flying to Las Vegas to compete in the final stage of the event.
"I wish all the teams well in their endeavours and look forward to seeing WA featured in this unique international event."
A television series developed around the event is expected to be screened globally and through Fox Sport mid-year.
