Two of the sporting world's foremost marketing experts will be keynote speakers at the Active 2002 Sport and Recreation Industry Conference, at the Sheraton Hotel Monday and Tuesday , October 21-22.
Paul Barber, director of marketing and communication for the English Premier Soccer League, and Anucha Browne-Sanders, vice president of marketing for the highly successful US National Basketball League New York Knicks, will headline the list of international guest speakers.
Sport and Recreation Minister Alan Carpenter said the calibre of speakers at Active 2002 demonstrated the status the annual sport and recreation industry conference had achieved.
"We have brought together some of the world's best exponents of marketing sport and recreation," Mr Carpenter said.
"Sport and recreation organisations are under increasing pressure to compete for people's time and energy, and marketing sport and recreation is one of the key challenges of the industry as society becomes more complex and our lives busier."
The challenges included making sport and recreation more attractive to women, seniors and young people.
Candy Tymson, author of Gender Games: Doing Business with the Opposite Sex will speak about marketing physical activity to women.
Professor George Moschis, Director, Centre for Mature Consumer Studies at Georgia State University will speak about understanding the consumer behaviour of an ageing population.
Dean Harris, managing director of Market Equity, will help sport and recreation groups 'de-dork' their organisations, to make them more attractive to young people.
Mr Carpenter acknowledged the support of the Lotteries Commission of WA as presenting partner for Active 2002.
"We cannot overstate the importance of Lotteries Commission funding for Western Australian Sport," he said.
"The commission injects around $9million into the sport and recreation industry every year.
"This year the Lotteries Commission has provided funding to enable more volunteers to attend Active 2002, which is an innovative way to make sure that people at the grassroots of sport and recreation can be exposed to the calibre of speakers we have assembled."
Active 2002 was an essential part of the State Government's campaign for a more active, healthier WA.
