Overwhelming response to property investment seminar
30/10/03
The State Government has received an overwhelming community response to today's property investment seminar in Perth.
About 600 people will attend the fully-booked seminar, organised by the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection.
Consumer and Employment Minister John Kobelke said the seminar was developed to counter a number of 'get rich quick' property investment workshops touring Western Australia.
"The Gallop Government has growing concern about the advice being peddled by many of these so-called experts," Mr Kobelke said.
"Much of this advice is self-interest driven and unlikely to be of any real benefit to the people who attend these seminars.
"People attending these seminars often encounter promoters who are either luring participants towards expensive courses or trying to sell their own developments, often in the guise of other companies.
"Against the backdrop of a skyrocketing housing market, this is extremely timely advice."
Mr Kobelke said today's department-endorsed seminar allowed consumers to access accurate information from independent experts.
Presenters include the Regional Commissioner of ASIC; the Valuer-General's office; the Real Estate Agents Supervisory Board Registrar; and the head of property, economic and finance studies at Curtin University.
"Today's workshop is part of the Gallop Government's proactive response to ensuring anyone thinking about property investment, particularly newly-retired people, are presented with the facts," Mr Kobelke said.
