31/8/02
Popular tourist attraction Caversham Wildlife Park is to have a new home in Perth's Whiteman Park.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said negotiations to relocate Caversham Wildlife Park to purpose-built premises within Whiteman Park have successfully concluded.
"Caversham Wildlife Park is a long-established tourist facility that enjoys considerable success," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The wildlife attraction will bring substantial additional tourism visitors into Whiteman Park and provide regular and local visitors with yet another activity.
"The new premises will include wildlife enclosures grouped according to the climatic zones from which the animals originate, with much of the existing vegetation retained and provision made for future expansion."
The new premises for Caversham Wildlife Park are located in Whiteman Village with easy access to the other facilities and attractions.
Preparatory work, with the provision of water and power to the site, has begun and Lakis Constructions has commenced construction.
"The official opening is expected in March, 2003, dependent on meeting the proposed finishing date and suitably cool weather for the relocation of the animals," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The Western Australian Planning Commission will fund the project, expected to cost $1.5million, with fit out by the operators of the wildlife park, the Thorne family."
