New fire appliance for top volunteer fire service
25/1/02
The handing over of a new firefighting appliance to the Kwinana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service today was a time to pause and reflect on the valorous work local volunteer and professional firefighters perform every day.
Emergency Services Minister Michelle Roberts said that especially on the Australia Day long weekend and after the recent New South Wales fire crisis, Western Australians should give thanks to those who gave unselfishly to protect life and property from bushfires.
"Yesterday we celebrated Australia Day and reflected on what makes Australia such a great country," Mrs Roberts said.
"The answer is found in volunteer groups like the Kwinana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, a group of people who are dedicated and giving to their community, who bond together to make it a better place for all to live in."
Mrs Roberts officially commissioned a $400,000 medium pumper at a ceremony held at the Kwinana Fire Station.
The medium pumper has a capacity of 1,200 litres and has all the necessary equipment on board to attend fires and road accidents.
Funded by the State Government through the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), it replaces an 18-year-old medium pumper. It was built by WA Fire Appliances of Narrogin, and FESA firefighters and fleet engineering staff contributed to its design.
Mrs Roberts said the medium pumper would be put to good use protecting the Kwinana community.
"Kwinana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service is one of the busiest brigades in WA," she said.
"Last financial year the brigade attended 501 incidents, and this financial year they have already attended over 350 incidents.
"The new medium pumper will ensure the current effective fire protection provided to the community of Kwinana is maintained."
Mrs Roberts commended the commitment and dedication of the 28 members of the Kwinana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and said several notable awards in recent times, including a national community safety award, underlined their commitment to the community.
"I am proud that the Government is able to support them in the work they do for their community and say thank you on behalf of all Western Australians for their untiring vigilance," she said.
