Newly elected local government councillors have been encouraged to attend regular training sessions to ensure they are fully equipped to deal with their new roles.
The appeal came from Local Government and Regional Development Minister Tom Stephens today, at the beginning of a new 'Getting Started' course conducted by Western Australia's Local Government Association (WALGA) at the St John of God Convention Centre in Subiaco.
"Having undertaken such an important community commitment, new councillors needed to ensure they were well prepared and skilled for their new role," Mr Stephens said.
Aside from a series of new training courses offered by WALGA, the State Government - through the Department of Local Government and Regional Development - will also provide newly-elected members with advice and support, as necessary, to ease them into their new role.
"In recent years, a great deal of effort has been put into lifting the performance standard of elected members and staff," the Minister said.
"It is part of the greater accountability provided for under the Local Government Act.
"Therefore, it is important new councillors are properly informed of all aspects of their broad roles and responsibilities as soon as possible.
"Courses such as 'Getting Started' give newly-elected members a clear understanding of the significance and breadth of the role they will undertake.
"I encourage all local governments to ensure their members are fully inducted and well-represented in upcoming training."
