Great Southern Minister Kim Chance today announced the appointment of Albany businessman Russell Harrison as Chairperson of the Great Southern Development Commission until November 2005.
Mr Harrison was born and brought up in the Great Southern and gained accountancy qualifications at the University of Western Australia.
For the past decade Mr Harrison has been a principal of Lincoln's Accountants in Albany, now one of the largest accounting forms in regional Western Australia.
"Mr Harrison's experience at Lincoln's has included widespread involvement and travel across the Great Southern," Mr Chance said.
"He has a good knowledge of industry and communities in the region and an in-depth understanding of key regional issues.
"He also has a strong community service background which includes a long-term role as Treasurer and Board of Management member of the Albany Business Centre and financial adviser to the new Albany Hospice.
"With his first-hand knowledge of private, public and community sectors, Mr Harrison will bring an exceptional blend of experience and expertise to the board."
Mr Chance also extended his thanks and appreciation to GSDC deputy chairperson Carolyn Daniel, who has been acting chairperson pending the new appointment.
The Minister also again thanked former chairperson Bruce Sutherland, who has resigned to take up a senior position with a national consulting firm in Perth.
