One of the oldest and most substantial buildings in Wagin, the former Federal Hotel in Tudhoe Street, has been interim listed in the State Government's Register of Heritage Places.
Environment and Heritage Minister Dr Judy Edwards said the heritage listing recognised the unique architectural and social qualities associated with the site.
"The Federal Hotel, built in 1896 is associated with the initial development of Wagin," Dr Edwards said.
"The construction of the building followed the opening of the Great Southern Railway in 1889 and pre-dates the gazettal of the town in 1898.
"It is a grand two-storey brick and iron regional hotel, designed in the Federation Filgree style, with an ornate timber balcony and ground floor verandah."
The Minister said the hotel was a major landmark in Wagin and extended an entire block, wrapping around two street corners.
"It has been a location for socialising for generations of Wagin's residents and visitors," she said.
"For 101 years until 1986, it served as a hotel and in 2000 reopened as a community and tourist venue.
"The site is also used as the Royal Flying Doctor Service Wagin visitor centre."
