Minister congratulates Virgin Blue on Broome flight commitment
24/6/03
Tourism Minister Clive Brown today welcomed Virgin Blue's announcement that it will extend its weekly Adelaide-Broome service until early 2004.
"This is fantastic news for tourism in the Kimberley," Mr Brown said.
"The combination of increased flight capacity into Broome and marketing of the region in the Eastern States has seen the region benefit from a strong tourism season this year.
"The continuation of these flights will enable the region to benefit beyond the traditional peak tourism season.
"We are working hard to ensure Western Australia becomes one of the world's great tourism destinations.
"More visitors to the Kimberley mean more jobs for locals, increased regional development and a boost to the area's many small businesses.
"This increased year-long service is also acknowledgement of the commitment and hard work by the tourism industry in the Kimberley to promote their unique part of our State."
In addition to the Virgin Blue Adelaide-Broome service, Qantas introduced a direct Melbourne-Broome service in March this year.
"Increased air access to regional WA has been a priority for the Government," Mr Brown said.
"I would like to thank and congratulate Virgin Blue for their faith in the Kimberley tourism experience."
Tourism generates $3.8billion each year for WA and employs more than 80,000 people.
