Nearly 70 young people from across the State have won medals in the Perth Region WorldSkills 2002 competition.
Most of the 23 skill category competitions were held in conjunction with the Department of Training's Career Choices Expo.
Training Minister John Kobelke said he was impressed with the high standard demonstrated by all the WorldSkills competitors, especially those who had won gold, silver or bronze medals.
"I was privileged to be invited to the Restaurant Services category held at South-East Metropolitan College of TAFE's Bentley campus and it was great to see first hand the high calibre of competition that WorldSkills generates," Mr Kobelke said.
"WorldSkills' mission is to challenge young people, their teachers, trainers and employers to achieve world class standards in all industries and to promote the status of vocational education and training across Australia.
"Since WorldSkills was established 20 years ago, 40,000 young Australians have had the opportunity to benchmark their skills against demanding standards. WorldSkills competitions are now held in 27 different regions around Australia."
Placegetters in each of the 23 categories will be presented with their medals at an awards ceremony breakfast on September 25 at the Hyatt Regency, Perth.
Perth region gold medallists may be eligible to join other regional representatives from all over Australia at the national WorldSkills competitions in Newcastle, NSW, in October this year. The State Government is supporting the participation of all Western Australian representatives in the national titles.
Winners in the national competition may have the opportunity to represent Australia at the International WorldSkills competitions to be held in St Gallen, Switzerland, in June 2003.
A record four gold, six silver and one bronze medal were won by Western Australians at the WorldSkills national titles in Adelaide in 2000. Two of the gold medallists, Jason Lippi and Byron Wright, went on to win diplomas of excellence in the international WorldSkills competition held in Seoul, Korea in 2001.
WorldSkills, organised and funded in WA by the Department of Training, is held every two years and is widely regarded as the pinnacle in competition achievement by young tradespeople all around the world.
