Local conservation and fauna projects in the southern metropolitan area have been awarded grants under the State Government's Community Conservation Grants Scheme.
Environment and Heritage Minister Dr Judy Edwards said $196,000 in grants had been awarded to 64 community groups and individuals to fund a range of conservation projects.
The grants allocated in the area include:

  • Bannister Creek Catchment Group - $4,000 towards the Tom Bateman Reserve Wetlands Revegetation Project in Lynwood. Works include the planting of local wetland plant species to increase bio-diversity and reduce weed seed being spread downstream;
  • Upper Canning Southern Wungong Integrated Catchment Team - $2,000 towards the Kendal Court - Outdoor Classroom for Grovelands Primary School project in Armadale;
  • $400 each for local fauna rescue and rehabilitation projects in Bibra Lake and Coolbellup;
  • Friends of Attadale Foreshore Inc - $4,000 towards revegetation of 1,500m of a reserve along the Attadale foreshore with indigenous reeds. The project is aimed at minimising erosion of the shoreline and boosting local flora and fauna; and
  • $290 to fauna care project in Thornlie.
Dr Edwards said the grants scheme reflected the State Government's commitment to build partnerships with the community to conserve the environment.
"To ensure we work effectively to protect and rehabilitate our natural surroundings, government and local groups must work hand in hand," she said.
"The grants scheme presents government with a unique opportunity to support community based conservation projects - which are well tuned to the needs of their local environment."
The grants assist organisations and individuals to continue with projects that conserve public lands and buy resources and rehabilitation equipment.
The applications were assessed in three categories by a panel that included representatives from the Department of Conservation and Land Management.
