The largest aerial photograph of the Perth metropolitan area ever produced can now be viewed on the Internet, following a launch today by Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan.
The image, covering Perth suburbs from Two Rocks to Mandurah is a record 12.4 gigabytes compressed - making it one of the largest aerial images in the world to be displayed on the Internet.
Alongside the colour metropolitan photograph is an equally large outer metropolitan view covering the Avon Valley south to Boddington.
Both images - which uncompressed together total more than 600 gigabytes - appear on the Department of Land Administration's new SkyView site, at http://www.landonline.com.au
Launching the SkyView site, Ms MacTiernan said that accessibility to land information, such as aerial photography, empowered the community to take a more active and informed role in the planning process.
"SkyView opens a window of opportunity for community groups, local landcare groups, farmers, local councils, property developers and planners who can now access this information over the Internet," she said.
"They will be able to use it as a tool for decision-making, development proposals, heritage and environmental purposes."
Visitors to the site can search by suburb, zoom in on their street or neighbourhood and purchase photos for immediate download.
Ms MacTiernan said DOLA had made its full library of previously unavailable digital imagery open for public view and purchase on the new website.
"SkyView is a revolutionary online planning and land information tool," she said.
"DOLA's vast library of aerial photography is already extensively used in town planning, conservation, agriculture, road management and tourism."
Compression software, which was developed by the Perth-based international company ER Mapper, was used to make the digitised photograph viewable on the Internet.
