The Kwinana Freeway will not be widened to accommodate an additional bus lane between Canning Highway and the Narrows Bridge, when the direct railway link between Perth and Mandurah is built.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said today she had already made it clear that there would be no encroachment of the Freeway on either the Swan River foreshore reserve, or on Melville Parade.
Ms MacTiernan said that as part of the master planning process, the Department for Planning and Infrastructure had considered accommodating a new bi-directional bus lane by widening the freeway, as one of many options.
"As soon as I was presented with this proposal I ruled it out," she said.
"For too long, we have been attempting to solve traffic congestion by expanding the road network, with little success.
"Our new direct rail link deals with the causes of congestion by offering a faster, competitive alternative for peak hour travellers."
Ms MacTiernan said that she expected the master plan would be completed in February.
