A $5,000 State Government grant has enabled work to recommence on restoration of the historic Carnarvon One Mile Jetty.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the grant to the Carnarvon Heritage Group would help fund public liability insurance required for the volunteer-based restoration project to proceed.
Ms MacTiernan said the group had approached her for additional assistance to meet an insurance bill of $21,000.
"The restoration of Carnarvon One Mile Jetty is a valuable community project which will ensure one of the State's heritage icons is not lost," she said.
"The structure is an important part of Carnarvon's history and as a significant tourist attraction, continues to play a role in the development of the town and the Gascoyne region."
Work on the restoration of the landmark was suspended in July last year after the Heritage Group failed to secure insurance for the new financial year.
As a community-based organisation, the heritage group was successful in obtaining insurance from the State Government's newly established Community Insurance Fund, managed by the Insurance Commission of WA.
Ms MacTiernan said the Shire of Carnarvon had agreed to contribute $3,000 to the cost of the insurance, in addition to an annual grant to assist the operations of the heritage group.
The heritage group had also secured State and Commonwealth funding to restore the jetty and operate tourist trains.
The Minister said the heritage group was to be commended for its commitment to the restoration project.
"The group has recently recommenced operation of a popular tourist train on the jetty which is a significant step forward for the project," she said.
