Freeway bus lanes open on Monday

Priority bus lanes on the Kwinana Freeway from the Narrows Bridge to Canning Highway, and a passenger transfer station at Canning Bridge begin operating on Monday, February 11.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the $34million project would provide better service for commuters until the South-West Metropolitan Railway, planned for completion in 2006, was completed.
Ms MacTiernan said the Busway infrastructure would then be incorporated into the new rail system.
"The Busway has been designed to cater for up to 200 buses per hour," she said.
"At peak periods it has the capacity to carry as many people as the 7,000 cars using the three traffic lanes on either side."
A two-level bus transfer station located at Canning Bridge will enable passengers to transfer to other bus services from four commuter platforms.
Two passenger platforms are located on the Canning Highway overpass and will connect east-west services to Perth and Fremantle via dedicated bus lanes on Canning Highway.
The other two passenger platforms are located at freeway level and will connect north and south bus services via Kwinana Freeway.
Commuters transferring from one bus service to another will be able to access the different platforms by stairs or lift.
"Currently, approximately 12,000 people travel along Kwinana Freeway by bus each day, with that number expected to grow significantly as more people begin to appreciate how easy and safe it is to travel into the city by public transport," the Minister said.
Transperth bus services started to use the new Busway lanes this week, with Canning Bridge Transfer Station becoming operational tomorrow (Monday, February 11).
Taxis are also permitted to use the Busway.
