Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich announced in Albany today that Flinders Park Primary School had won the $10,000 first prize in the district's 'School Yard Blitz' competition.
Mount Lockyer Primary School won the second prize of $5,000 and Tambellup Primary School won third prize of $2,500. Mount Manypeaks Primary School, Frankland Primary School and Little Grove Primary School each won a $1,000 commendation.
During School Yard Blitz 25, public schools in the Albany Education District were given $5,000 and four weeks to give their school a make-over, using anything from flowers and flags to sculptures.
"I have been very impressed by the creative ways the students, staff and members of the communities have greatly improved the look and the feel of their schools," Ms Ravlich said.
"The winning entry included murals, mosaics, flags and brightly coloured flowers that promoted the school's theme - Joy Of Life."
School Yard Blitz Albany was run by the Department of Education and Training's Albany District Education Office.
On the judging panel were Albany MLA Peter Watson; Stirling MLA Terry Redman; Tullio Rubinich, district manager of the Department of Education and Training; and Tracey Blaszkow, a member of the Keep Albany Beautiful and Tidy Towns committees.
The Minister said the judges looked not just for artistic design and creativity but how the local community was involved in the project
"School Yard Blitz is a fantastic example of co-operation between the school and the local community and I congratulate everyone who took part," she said.
"A school belongs to its community and the more parents and community members are involved with their schools, the more students benefit."
Ms Ravlich said community involvement was an important part of the Gallop Government's education platform and the Government supported local decision-making, including the selection of school staff.
"Our schools are a focal point for the community and the Gallop Government will spend $1billion to provide new and better schools across Western Australia, which is the biggest commitment to education capital works in WA," she said.
