Exmouth's Marina Village
4/6/02
Work is about to get under way on Exmouth's landmark marina village project, following the State Government's awarding of a $10.571million works contract.
Premier Geoff Gallop said today the Government's land developer, LandCorp, had awarded RJ Vincent the contract to construct the project, which would provide a new level of residential, commercial and tourism facilities for the region.
"Exmouth Marina Village will fulfil a long-held dream for the people of Exmouth and will provide a level of infrastructure required to match the world-class attractions of the Gascoyne," Dr Gallop said.
"The 102ha development will comprise four superlots to accommodate a canal-front residential estate, a tourist resort, a mixed-use commercial/residential zone and services for the local fishing and marine industries.
"It will link with the $15million boat harbour built during the 1990s and provide an environmentally responsible and safe launching point for boats visiting the world-renowned Ningaloo Reef, which is about 90 minutes cruising time away on the other side of the peninsula."
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the State Government recognised that public investment was needed to stimulate regional development.
"This investment will act as a catalyst to attract private sector investment and we will see the development of high quality, environmentally compatible accommodation, attractions and infrastructure," Ms MacTiernan said.
She said RJ Vincent was an experienced construction group, whose previous projects included LandCorp developments at Minim Cove, Atwell South and Clarkson, plus work at Port Geographe Bay, Busselton; Dallyellup Beach Estate, Bunbury; and Roebuck Estate in Broome.
It was awarded the contract after a thorough tender process.
"The local economy will also benefit from the work, with the contractor using transport, concrete materials and accommodation from the Gascoyne region," Ms MacTiernan said.
The first step in the development will involve the preparation by RJ Vincent of a detailed construction management plan to ensure all environmental, health, traffic and safety measures are in place.
Work will then start on the canal component and last for 10-11 months. It will include the excavation of 700,000 cubic metres of sand and rock, dewatering of the area and the construction of walls to create an inland waterway.
