Premier Geoff Gallop today announced that Emirates would add a further seven daily flights between Dubai and Perth from October next year, providing a massive boost to our economy, our tourism industry and our burgeoning produce trade.
"This is great news for Western Australia and reflects the confidence Emirates has in the WA market," Dr Gallop said.
"The new services will bring the total to 14 services per week, placing Perth on the same footing as Melbourne and Sydney and injecting an estimated $30million a year into the WA economy.
"The increase indicates the growing demand from both tourists and business travellers for more air access to WA."
The Premier said Emirates delivered a one-stop service - via Dubai, European, United Kingdom and African destinations - many of which were not serviced by other airlines flying to Perth.
The increased service would provide further choice for Western Australians travelling overseas, including a new schedule that would enable passengers to travel to the UK and Europe in daylight hours and arrive in the early evening. (Daily flight would depart Perth at 6.20am, Dubai at 1.30pm and arrive in London at 6.30pm).
It would also give international visitors to WA more flexibility, lower airfares and more opportunities to sample all WA had to offer.
"WA exporters will also benefit from the additional direct links into the Emirates network," Dr Gallop said.
"WA opened a trade office in Dubai in 2002, consolidating the State's trade position in this important export market.
"These flights will hopefully lead to lower airfares and more competitive air freight prices and will offer new opportunities for the tourism and perishables export industry to further develop existing markets and scope new ones.
"An additional 98 tonnes of air freight capacity will be available each week, presenting further opportunities for our primary producers and the perishables export industry to send our sought after seafood, fruit and vegetables, dairy products and wine overseas."
The Premier said the State Government, in association with Westralia Airports Corporation, worked closely with Emirates to secure these new services and would work with any airlines looking to expand services into and from WA.
