City and country schools linked in outback year
14/5/02
More than 40 schools across Western Australia have been linked in a partnership and exchange program to mark the Year of the Outback.
Regional Development Minister Tom Stephens, who is responsible for the Year of the Outback program, today announced the first 20 country schools each matched with one or more Perth schools.
"This Sister School Project will allow primary students to share information and experiences with their counterparts in the bush or in the city," Mr Stephens said.
"It's all about discovery - a theme which sits at the heart of the Year of the Outback celebrations."
The Minister said the sister school partnerships would set up a range of cultural, geographical, project and exchange opportunities throughout the year.
"Advancements in technology and communications allow for potential successes with this project to be dramatically improved," he said.
"To date there has been a great deal of enthusiasm from teachers from right around the State."
To complement the project, an Outback School Pack of project material and activities will be produced for State-wide distribution this term.
Four schools in the Kimberley and Goldfields-Esperance regions are participating along with three in the Wheatbelt, two in the Pilbara, Mid-West, South-West and Gascoyne and one in the Great Southern.
