Beaconsfield house to be demolished for safety reasons
9/5/01
A degraded house located at 22 Healy Road, Beaconsfield will be demolished by Main Roads for safety reasons.
The dwelling, which was vacated in January 1999 because of severe white ant infestation in structural timbers, has since been deemed structurally unsafe and will be removed to ensure it does not pose a danger to the local community.
The relevant land was originally acquired by Main Roads to accommodate the now deleted Fremantle Eastern Bypass project.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said that while some members of the community might regard the demolition as the start of activity on the Fremantle Eastern Bypass, they could be confident that the house was being demolished because of its poor general condition, as well as concerns about asbestos contained at the site.
"The community can be assured that while Main Roads has arranged for the demolition of the dwelling, the Government's commitment to remove the FEB from the Metropolitan Region Scheme has not changed," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The property has been targeted by vandals and has been largely destroyed with most of the jarrah floorboards being removed causing concern among local residents."
The land will now be tidied up for the surrounding community to ensure the area is made safe.
