Australia's biggest schools event launched
2/7/01
The biggest single schools event in Australia - the Country Senior High Schools' Carnival - has been launched at Perry Lakes Stadium today by Education Minister Alan Carpenter.
With 3,500 participants from every senior high school outside the metropolitan area and three private schools, this 69th carnival is an annual event in the last week of second term.
"Over the five-day event there will be 10 individual sporting competitions across 48 divisions involving more than 1,000 separate contests in sports that include Australian rules football, netball, hockey, basketball, volleyball and soccer," Mr Carpenter said.
"It's difficult for students from a number of country areas to compete against opponents of their own age so they may have to take part in senior competition which is often physically demanding.
"However, the carnival is not just about sport.
"There are also speech and debating competitions and a range of other activities including specially produced stage productions, a special exhibition at Scitech, film screenings, coaching from elite teams and visits to university campuses."
The carnival is organised by School Sport WA on behalf of the Education Department through a volunteer group of teachers and representatives of State sporting associations.
