Attorney General Jim McGinty has welcomed the decision today by the Court of Criminal Appeal to uphold an appeal lodged by John Button against his conviction nearly 40 years ago over the manslaughter of Rosemary Anderson.
"Mr Button and his family have been to hell and back and it must be a tremendous relief to them that his name has finally been cleared after such a long time," Mr McGinty said.
"Today's decision by the Court of Criminal Appeal was a very strong decision, with the Chief Justice clearly stating there had been a miscarriage of justice."
Asked if Mr Button might be eligible for compensation, Mr McGinty said that if an application was received, it would receive sympathetic consideration.
He said the Government received applications for ex-gratia compensation payments from time to time from people who had convictions overturned, although it was rare for compensation to be paid.
