7/12/03
Three artists have been awarded Creative Development Fellowships of $40,000 to enable them to explore their artforms in the fields of textiles, new media and writing.
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale said a further three Youth Creative Development Fellowships of $10,000, nine grants to support young artists and 13 for indigenous artists, had also been awarded by ArtsWA through its peer assessment process.
Grant projects will commence after January 1, 2004.
"ArtsWA grants are an important part of the Government's direct support for Western Australian artists," Ms McHale said.
"The Creative Development Fellowships are particularly important as they are awarded to established and respected artists to enable them to focus on honing their skills."
Mrs McHale said artist Jane Whitely, of Fremantle, Tess Williams, of Coolbellup, and Rodney Glick, of Leederville, were awarded Creative Development Fellowships.
Ms Whitely, who has exhibited internationally and whose work is represented in collections at the Art Gallery of WA, the Powerhouse Museum Sydney and private collections, will further her textiles practice through the research and through interstate placements. The resulting artworks will explore memory and childhood through cross-media presentation, combining cloth with video and performance.
Ms Williams, a well-recognised science-fiction author of short stories, as well as two novels, 'Sea as Mirror' (Harper Collins Australia 2000) and 'Map as Power' (Random House 1996), will spend a year as writer-in-residence with Symbiotica at the University of WA.
Mr Glick, one of WA's most prolific contemporary artists, is integral to the establishment of the International Art Space, Kellerberrin, and will exhibit work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and collect imagery for a new work, 'Nullabor'.
He will further his new media work experience through a residency with the Australia Centre for the Moving Image, accessing archival footage in their collection.
Sarah Contos, a visual artist of Northbridge, Desmond White, a jazz musician and composer of Mt Lawley and Samara Cunningham, a dancer from Wembley, were awarded Youth Creative Development Fellowships.
The fellowships and the grants are to the value of $310,714.
