And the winner is - Fiona Stanley Hospital

Three southern suburbs residents can take the credit for coming up with the name for the new 1,000-bed Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch.
Valma Fisher, of Mandurah, Grant Powell, from Spearwood and Barbara Sharp, of Rivervale, all suggested the name in a competition run in the southern suburbs community newspapers late last year.
Professor Fiona Stanley, an eminent Western Australian doctor and the 2003 Australian of the Year, has dedicated her life to researching the causes of major childhood illnesses and birth defects so they can be prevented.
Health Minister Jim McGinty said he was thrilled to see the new hospital named after an inspirational Western Australian
" In the past, hospitals have been named after royalty or geography," Mr McGinty said.
"What could be more appropriate than naming our newest hospital after one of WA's greatest doctors.
"Fiona Stanley believes we need to get things right for children and families now, so we can look forward to a positive and healthy future for the community.
"This is the same view that the Labor Government has to health care."
The Minister said planning for the Fiona Stanley Hospital had already begun, with construction due to start at the beginning of 2007.
The Fiona Stanley hospital will open its doors to patients in 2010 as a 600-bed facility and be upgraded to 1,000-beds by 2020.
The new hospital will provide the full range of health services of a teaching hospital including:

• a 24-hour emergency department capable of dealing with major trauma;
• cardiothoracic services;
• cancer treatments and radiation therapy;
• renal transplantation and dialysis;
• obstetrics and gynaecology;
• paediatrics;
• radiology services including CT and MRI scanning; and
• a clinical research centre.

"The Fiona Stanley Hospital is vital to the future of our public health system and will give residents south of the river a state-of-the-art facility right on their doorstep," Mr McGinty said.
The response to the competition to find a name for the new hospital in Murdoch was overwhelming with more than 400 entries received.
The posted and emailed suggestions featured a wide variety of names for the hospital, including current well-known Western Australians, historical figures from the State's past, native flora and fauna, landmarks and creative names.
Valma Fisher, Grant Powell and Barbara Sharp all received Healthy Prize Packs and the honour of choosing the name for the new hospital.
Seven other people have also been awarded prizes for their contributions. They were:

Jacaranda Hospital - Mrs P.J. Tring (Bateman)

Strickland Hospital - Robert Tana (Noranda)
Heart of the South - Kylie Cole (Mandurah).
