Affordable housing for seniors at Shenton Village
15/4/04
An affordable seniors' accommodation complex on the former Shenton Park Hotel site was opened today by Housing and Works Minister Nick Griffiths.
The acquisition of the 66-unit complex from a manager/receiver of a private retirement village development was driven by a strong demand in inner city Perth and is now known as Shenton Village.
Mr Griffiths praised the City of Subiaco for the work of its social housing advisory committee, which provided advice to the Department of Housing and Works on retaining and strengthening the social housing presence within Subiaco.
"The Government's provision of more affordable accommodation for seniors close to support facilities such as hospitals has received continuous help from the City of Subiaco," he said.
"Seniors' housing accords with the original intent of the unit complex and the terms of the council's development approval.
"The location of the Shenton Village units in Nicholson Road is well served for shopping, community and health facilities and public transport."
At a cost of $14million, the complex consists of three one-bedroom units, 50 two-bedroom units and 13 three-bedroom units, with the former hotel providing 22 rooms.
The Minister said aged care was a crucial issue for the State Government as Australia experienced an era of unprecedented growth in its ageing population.
"The Department of Housing and Works has a long association with the city through this committee and is pleased that its efforts are contributing significantly to the progress we are now seeing," he said.
"In particular, Mayor Tony Costa is well-known for his hard work to ensure that this is a neighbourhood with a balanced and interesting social mix.
"The provision of upgraded Homeswest seniors' accommodation in this area marks another small step toward caring for long-term residents of the neighbourhood by providing a balanced community."
