2003 Beazley Medal winners role models for learning: Premier
3/01/04
The highest ever medal score, straight A's and more than 2,000 hours of study have earned two Western Australian students the prestigious TEE and VET Beazley Medals for 2003.
Premier Geoff Gallop today announced Dougal Maclaurin (17), of Hale School, as the winner of the 2003 Beazley Medal: TEE and Joel Treeby (17), of WA College of Agriculture - Denmark, as the winner of the 2003 Beazley Medal: VET.
Introducing the two winners in Kings Park this morning, Dr Gallop, a General Exhibition winner himself in 1968, said both students had achieved extremely high standards in their different areas of learning.
"Education and training are vital in providing our young people with the appropriate knowledge and skills to realise their maximum potential and pursue their future career, education and training paths," the Premier said.
"We are committed to providing young people with a flexible, relevant education and training system, which will enable them to pursue a variety of options best suited to their needs, abilities and aspirations.
"Dougal and Joel have taken full advantage of the great opportunities that are available from having such a wide range of options in our State's education and training system."
Dr Gallop said Dougal's Curriculum Council Award Score of 99.55 was the highest on record [2002 (99.24), 2001 (97.92), 2000 (98.97), 1999 (97.21), 1998 (97.02); 1997 (95.91)].
"In his six TEE subjects, Dougal scored 100 in English Literature, Calculus and Physics, 99.34 in Applicable Mathematics, 98.39 in Ancient History, and 97.43 in Chemistry," he said.
"He has also achieved a General Exhibition, Subject Exhibitions in Calculus and Ancient History, Certificates of Distinction in all his subjects and a Certificate of Excellence.
The Premier said Beazley medal: VET winner Joel Treeby had spent this week harvesting on a farm east of Esperance.
"Joel is an outstanding vocational education and training (VET) student who completed nearly 2,000 hours of VET studies and achieved six Certificate II training certificates in agriculture and automotive studies," Dr Gallop said.
"Joel received 'A' grades for each of his six Year 12 subjects of Personal Information Technology, Senior English, Small Business Management and Enterprise, Animal Production and Marketing, Plant Production and Marketing, Farm Practice, and SWL (Structured Workplace Learning) - Primary Industry.
"He has also achieved Subject Exhibitions in Animal Production and Marketing, and Plant Production and Marketing, Certificates of Distinction in those two subjects and a Certificate of Excellence.
"In addition, both boys were the only students to have gained two Subject Exhibitions.
"I congratulate both Joel and Dougal on these truly exceptional individual performances.
"They are good role models for other boys in that they were committed to learning and had a balance in their lives through their range of interests both in and out of school."
In all, there were 792 winners across 1072 awards.
"All award winners achieved extremely high standards and this signals the outstanding abilities and efforts of young people across the State," Dr Gallop said.
"The results are also indicative of the high quality of education, training and teaching in WA."
The Premier also acknowledged the 'support crews' of the winners, including parents, friends, teachers and the resources of the education system.
All awards will be presented at the Curriculum Council Awards Presentation Ceremony at Edith Cowan University's Joondalup Campus on Wednesday, February 25.
