Transport Minister Eric Charlton today announced the awarding of a contract for a new Transperth ferry.

Mr Charlton said the contract to design, construct and supply a new ferry had been awarded to a Western Australia company 'SBF Shipbuilders'. He said the ferry would be constructed at the company's South Coogee shipyard.

The new ferry, a 21.7m aluminium catamaran, will replace the existing ferry, The Princess, which operates between Barrack Street, Perth and Mends Street, South Perth.

Mr Charlton said customer service would be enhanced by the provision of 144 seats and increased space for wheelchairs, bicycles and prams and would incorporate all features necessary to provide accessible public transport for people with disabilities. The existing ferry seated 104 passengers.

The contract was for $684,000 and the ferry was scheduled to begin services in August 1997.
