A respected identity in the field of urban development has been appointed the deputy chairman of the Western Australian Planning Commission.

Planning Minister Richard Lewis said Anne Arnold, executive director of the Urban Development Institute of Australia in WA, would replace retiring commissioner and deputy chairman John D'Orazio, from the City of Bayswater.

Mr Lewis said Mrs Arnold had represented community and professional interests on the commission since December 1993.

"Since taking up the position with the UDIA in 1989, Mrs Arnold has been its representative on various Government committees," he said.

"Mrs Arnold has close affiliations with kindred industry groups, through the UDIA, including the Housing Industry Association, Building Owners and Managers Association and the Real Estate Institute of WA."

The Minister appointed two new commissioners and two deputies to represent local Government on the WAPC.

Stirling City councillor Terry Tyzack is the new metropolitan member and Chittering Shire councillor Sue Metcalf will represent local authorities outside Perth.

Mr Lewis said City of Bayswater Mayor John D'Orazio and City of Bunbury Mayor Dr Ern Manea had made a great contribution to the State during the time they served as commissioners on both the WAPC and the former State Planning Commission.

He said Mr D'Orazio was a commissioner for eight years and Dr Manea was appointed when the WAPC was established in March 1995.

"The talents and vast experience of both men will be greatly missed," Mr Lewis said.

The Minister said councillors Metcalf and Tyzack would bring valuable local government experience to the State's peak land use planning authority.

Terry Tyzack, an architect, had been a councillor for the City of Stirling almost continuously since 1974, including terms as mayor and deputy mayor.

"He has consistently been a member of the council's town planning and statutory services committee and has been a district and regional delegate to various planning bodies," Mr Lewis said.

Sue Metcalf, of Bindoon, has been a councillor for the Shire of Chittering since 1990 and is chairman of its town planning committee.

She is a member of the steering committee for the Gnangara Land Use and Water Management Strategy and served on the Long Term Minerals Sands Strategy Committee.

Mr Lewis said Armadale City councillor Roger Stubbs and Capel Shire President Bill Scott would serve a deputies to the local government representatives.
