$1.2M spent on upgrading eastern suburbs schools

Schools in Perth's eastern suburbs will have nearly $1.2 million spent on additions and upgrades as part of the Education Department's capital works program.

Education Minister Norman Moore said today the Bayswater Primary School was to have a $1million upgrade, which was expected to be completed towards the end of 1995.

Details had been agreed with the school community and an architect had been appointed to prepare final plans.

The new facilities would include an automated library/resource centre, a covered assembly area, an upgraded administration area, including a new staff room and new toilets.

Mr Moore said the Gladys Newton Education Support Centre in Balga would also have new toilet facilities at a cost of $30,000.

The Durham Road Education Support Centre in Bayswater would receive a $55,000 upgrading of its swimming pool, involving new showers and changerooms.

Tuart College at Tuart Hill would undergo roof repairs worth $106,000.

"These projects are part of the ongoing State Government commitment to bring our schools up to contemporary standards after the previous decade of neglect," Mr Moore said.

"The backlog of school maintenance and upgrading, left over from the previous administration, is being progressively and systematically addressed, based on priority needs across the 768 schools in the State."
