Top UWA engineering students win places on Gledden Tour of USA & England
7/10/99
A group of 20 top engineering students from the University of Western Australia (UWA) have been awarded a place on the prestigious Gledden Tour of America and England next month.
Resources Development, Energy, and Education Minister Colin Barnett met the group today at a ceremony at UWA to present a $4,000 cheque on behalf of the Department of Resources Development to assist with funding for the tour.
The tour is named in honour of Dr Robert Gledden, a mining surveyor who designed the Kalgoorlie townsite in 1894. Dr Gledden died in 1927, leaving a generous sum to UWA for the promotion of education in applied sciences.
"As a result of the generosity of this great Western Australian you will be exposed to the highest levels of engineering excellence," Mr Barnett told the students.
"This will be invaluable to your future professional development."
The students will visit operations displaying the interaction of various engineering disciplines including Northrop Grummen Corporation which produces the F/A 18 fighter jets used by the Australian Air Force, and NASA's Kennedy Space Centre where they will witness a Space Shuttle launch. They will also visit prestigious institutions such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard and Cambridge University.
The students, who enter their final year of study in 2000, are selected on academic merit from a cross section of disciplines including mechanical, electrical and electronic, biomedical, information technology, civil and environmental engineering.
